Installation Recommendation for a fresh SharePoint Server

To keep all files in a SharePoint installation up-to-date, the following sequence is recommended.

  1. Service Pack 2 for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and language packs
  2. Service Pack 2 for Office SharePoint Server 2007 and language packs
  3. Bugfix 971620 (which fix the trial issue, this fix will be included in the next round of cumulative update)
  4. June Cumulative Update package for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0
  5. June Cumulative Update package for Office SharePoint Server 2007

Please note: Start from April Cumulative Update, the packages will no longer install on a farm without a service pack installed. You must have installed either Service Pack 1 (SP1) or SP2 prior to the installation of the cumulative updates.

After applying the preceding updates, run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard or “psconfig –cmd upgrade –inplace b2b -wait” in command line. This needs to be done on every server in the farm with SharePoint installed.

The version of content databases should be 12.0.6510.5000 after successfully applying these updates.

You can also refer to April Cumulative Update post for deployment guides, slipstream how-to links and FAQs.

Project Server 2007: License type set to trial after loading Office Server Service Pack 2 (SP2)

July 30, 2009

The KB for this issue is now live at  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971620 but currently it does not say that this issue also applies to Microsoft Office Project Server 2007.  This will be corrected shortly, but this certainly does also apply to Project Server 2007 once the Office Servers SP2 is loaded – regardless of the presence of MOSS.

This is an emerging issue where we are seeing servers that have been updated with the 2007 Microsoft Office Servers Service Pack 2 (SP2) KB953334 are set to a trial license, with an expiry around the end of October 2009.

For the official statement on this issue please see the SharePoint blog, which also contains some FAQ answers on this topic.

This appears to apply to servers with Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and Project Server 2007 both loaded, as well as servers with just Project Server 2007.  Thanks to Shazeb and Kyle for bringing it to our attention!

The fix is simple – just re-enter the license key.  The Project Server 2007 one, or the Office SharePoint Server 2007 one if you have MOSS loaded too.  This is done on the Operations page from SharePoint Central Administration under the Upgrade and Migration section (lower left) called Convert license type.

If you see the word “Trial” in the description area then you have the problem.

On the page itself enter the key, which will be the usual 25 characters in 5 groups of 5.  The following screen shot is of a server after the correct key is entered – so it doesn’t show “trial”.

There will be a KB article coming soon KB 971620, but at the time of writing this is not live – though expected in the next 48hrs. No rush to fix as the expiry is not for a few months – but best to do it before you forget.  No reboot necessary.

Project Server 2007: Check-in Pending Laid to Rest?

July 28, 2009

With the recently released Project 2007 and Project Server 2007 Service Pack 2 (SP2) along with the Project 2007 and Project Server 2007 April Cumulative update hopefully we have seen the last of the false “check-in pending” issues.  It is obviously still possible that the project may really be not checked in – but the false message should be a thing of the past.  And I am absolutely positive that we you will tell me if I am wrong!  And there could still be a scenario we haven’t heard about that we need to fix – so do let us know.

As with all cache related problems you may still see an issue if your cache is already “bad”, so best to make sure all your projects are really checked in on the server, and delete your cache (from the OS, not just the menu item in Pro) to ensure all is good when you load these new updates.

New Free Add-on For Saving Outlook Attachments to SharePoint

July 23, 2009
